The LAG

Deep Stacks Against a LAG

Depth amplifies pressure, and pressure is the LAG's whole game: at 250bb their triple barrel threatens your stack instead of your buy-in top-up. The counter is pot geometry, not heroism.

From Poker Ascent: 110,000+ drills across 10 skills, graded against the player type you are facing.

Keep medium hands in medium pots

Deep against a LAG, the call-down doctrine gets a ceiling: top pair still calls flop and turn, but choose lines that keep the river bet survivable. In position, call rather than raise; out of position, check-call flop and turn and evaluate rivers by sizing.

Trap deeper, more often

The LAG's barrels fund your slow plays at depth: flatting their 3-bet with queens plus, check-calling twice with sets, letting them build the pot your monster wants. The same traps that starve against a TAG feast against a LAG deep.

Choose flips in position

Deep LAG pots swing hardest when you are out of position; the marginal defends that are fine at 100bb should tighten OOP at 250bb, and loosen in position where you control the river.

240bb, you flat the LAG's button 3-bet with J♠ J♥. Flop 9♣ 6♠ 2♦: check-call. Turn 3♥: check-call. River K♦, they overbet shove 130bb. The king is the card their bluffs prayed for and their value never needed. Deep-stack overbets are value-heavy even from LAGs: fold, and know that at 100bb with normal sizing the same hand calls. Depth changed the answer, not the villain.

The mistakes that cost you

  • Raising their barrels off your medium hands (folds air, pays hits).
  • Treating 250bb call-downs like 100bb ones.
  • Refusing every big fold because LAGs bluff (sizing plus depth still talks).

Practice beating the LAG

The app has a dedicated lag mission: hundreds of drills where the correct answer is graded against exactly this player type. Same hands, same reads you just learned.
